Many African American veterans are buried in Chain Lake Baptist cemetery. Many are from the colored troops during the American Civil War.

James Washington was a local black barber who helped runaway slaves escape to Michigan where they could cross over into Canada.

Porter Rea Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the earliest black settlers to St. Joseph County, Indiana. It is located inside Potato Creek State Park.
